It's My Own Fault

My days are crazy and chaotic. That's to be expected with 5 kids. To be perfectly honest, however, I know that we create at least 90% of our own craziness.

Take the morning routine, for example. Two days a week, I leave the house at 7:15 am with all 5 kids, drop 4/5 of the children at their school which isn't in our town, return to a different part of our town to bring Charlotte to the babysitter, and then end up in an entirely new town to go to work.

I try not to whine about it, though, because it is all our choice. It is our choice to send the kids to a school that is neither near our house nor near my work. So why complain? But, just for fun, I logged our stops into my GPS this morning to see just how ridiculous the routine really is:

Just plain silly...
So there it is in living color. My ridiculous commute. Watch out, folks... crazy mama driving.

There Will Be Blood... & Coffee

I've talked about my caffeine addiction before. It's kind of the running theme in this crazy life.

Last week, I was completely exhausted and decided to treat myself to a latte at Starbucks. I don't usually go there because the coffee is twice as expensive as Dunkin Donuts. My caffeine habit what it is, we'd be broke in no time. I decided I deserved a little treat and went to Starbucks after I dropped the kids off at school. When I got there, I was happy to be running a little early (for once) because the line was almost out the door. I guess that's to be expected when ordering your coffee takes ten minutes. Yes, lady with the venti half-caf soy chai latte, I'm talking to you.

While waiting in this ridiculous line, some silly lady came in the door. At this point the line was pushing up against the door. Basically, her choice was to continue the line out the door, or make it go alongside the wall. Instead of these wise choices, she tried to get in front of me. Seriously. Line cutting. Which prompted me to tweet this:

Probably not one of my finer moments, but, for real? Are you so special that the basic rules of kindergarten don't apply to you? No cuts, no buts, no coconuts. That's all I have to say about that.

After gently edging out the pushy witch (all the while thinking violent thoughts), I finally made it to the front of the line. I ordered my venti nonfat latte and made a last minute decision to cancel out the "nonfat" with a pumpkin scone. Then I went and took out a loan for my breakfast. My real problems didn't start until they asked for a name for my cup. This whole name your drink thing is a struggle for me. My name is Lissie. For whatever reason, that name is just too difficult. I get a puzzled look, but I refuse to spell it. I haven't had my coffee, yet. That is way too much conversation. In hindsight, I'm thinking I should just say Jane or Mary. It would simplify the process.

Luckily, I'm cool with the barista shouting out "LESSI" and knowing she probably means me. Unlike Irina in front of me. Who waited for an extra 10 minutes because the barista was putting the emphasis on the wrong syllable.

The latte and scone were a terrific treat. A little pricey, and taxing on my patience, but a good thing on occasion. If I tried to brave that place on a daily basis, I'd be broke and probably end up hurting somebody.

How about you? Where do you get your daily fix?

Yum

You Know It's Going To Be One Of Those Days When...

You know it's going to be one of those days when:

  • you realize your daughter left her uniform dress at school.
  • you're still packing lunch boxes when it's time to leave the house.
  • you're dressing small children by force because you don't have time to let them do it themselves.
  • you're running late to leave the house and you remember the car seat isn't in the car.
  • you remember that you forgot to get gas in said car last night (and you can't even blame it on your husband).
  • your youngest child throws up scrambled eggs all over herself and her car seat while you're doing the mad dash to get to school.
  • you get your children to school 10 minutes late and still have to drop your baby off at the babysitter before you go to work.
  • your three year old randomly starts crying because he doesn't want to go to school and you have to tear him off your legs in the classroom.
  • you eat two bags of Fun Size M&M's for breakfast.
So, instead of losing your f'ing mind, you try to focus on the positive:
  • Today is your last day of work for the week.
  • The kids are off tomorrow so NOBODY has to wake up (especially since you already threatened them within an inch of their lives).
  • Your best buddy at work knew you were having a tough morning and brought you both your morning coffee AND pizza for lunch!
There it is.  Just another one of those days. It is what it is...
