Tuesday's Tip (#16)

Here's a tip for you:

Take a walk.

Sometimes I get so caught up in doing fun activities with the kids, that I forget the simplicity of taking a walk. Today we walked in the arboretum. It was fun, free, full of nature and, best of all, it wore them out.

So, when the kids are off the wall and you're at wit's end, just take a walk. It'll work wonders on all of you!

The Play-date Effect

Everyone has heard the saying, "The more, the merrier!" It totally applies in a houseful of kids. Patrick and Lucy each had a friend come over this week. Patrick had his friend, Connor, come over on Tuesday and Lucy had her friend, Sadie, on Thursday. I think both moms thought I might be slightly crazy to want to add more kids to the mix. As a matter of fact, one mom's sister told her she was mean to send her child to someone who already has five kids. But, there's a certain sense of novelty when a new child comes to the house. My kids become so entranced by having a new person in the house that they are all on their best behavior and they have no interest in me whatsoever. It's fantastic.

It is actually less work for me to have more kids. There must be some kind of mathematical theory that applies here, I just haven't found it yet. I know it goes something like

Just kidding. I don't drink martinis. I drink microbrews (preferably IPA's). And usually not during play-dates. Although, that would make my afternoons more interesting.

The point is, I think I'm on to something with this play-date routine. I had two of the most polite kids over this week and I probably should have paid them for how well they entertained my kids. So, who's coming over next? Mommy needs to do some relaxing...

Tuesday's Tip (#15)

Here's a tip for you:

Buy some mascara.

Recently, I was chatting with another mom of a bunch of kids and she asked me why I always look so "put together." I was thinking maybe she was a little nuts because I knew I'd only had about 3 1/2 hours of broken sleep the previous night and no shower. But, then it dawned on me. I've been fooling people for years with my make-up.

I've always been that girl who wears make-up every day. It's just who I am. Not much, but a little concealer, some mascara and some lipstick and... voila! I no longer look like the queen of the zombie apocalypse that was staring back at me in the mirror that morning. Depending on the night I've had, I try to decide exactly how much make-up it'll take until I look human again.

So, when you've had a tough night and you feel like death warmed over, throw on some black mascara. You'll be the best looking zombie around.

My personal favorite
